Writing Meme Question Thing!
Sure, I'll bite.
1) Why Do You Write?
My mind is full of train tracks of high-speed thoughts, and it's crowded -- the trains are going everywhere, in every which direction, at every speed, at every time. And many of these trains are originating from Station Imagination, which seems to spew wacky ideas roughly every couple of hours, whenever it wants, about anything. Writing gives these thoughts a final station -- whether as a release or an outlet, or as something to create.
Basically? I write because I have to, because I love it, and because it's one of the best stress relievers I have.
2) What Sort Of Things Inspire You?
Other writers and my friends. Reading gives me ideas for style and worlds, though I often stop writing for a while after reading something so I don't accidentally copy the book's style. More than that, my friends, writers or not, are a huge inspiration. Knowing somebody actually reads my work is a great push forward, and having people ask questions and pose ideas about it? Even more inspiration -- many of my ideas have come from conversations with fellow writers, and talking about my writing -- perhaps trying to explain something, for instance -- often helps me identify flaws or fine-tune things. So I'd definitely say other people.
When/Where Do You Write Best?
When talking to other writers, usually. Where? At my computer, the actual location usually doesn't matter too much though I write better when fewer people are around. Most of this is up in the air though -- when the writing bug arrives, it takes me away.
4) What Concepts Are You Constantly Trying To Communicate?
That different does not mean wrong. That there are multiple forms of right. That war, suffering, cruelty are not the answer. That living things in pain should not be ignored, because their problem may not go away. And that this world is a pretty odd place, so we should probably cherish it.
5) Do You Find There Are Any Recurring Thematic Elements In Your Work?
Oh definitely. Human psychology tends to play a massive role. The many different ways people may think, disorders, you name it. Also human rights, or sentient rights in the case of my novel. There tend to be an awful amount of rights atrocities occurring in my work, from the forced sterilization of all wereanimals in Welen to the near-extermination of the succubi in Arebe. And then there's the abuse, from the battered woman in my novel, to the brutal child abuse Tegre and Kader experienced (him from his father, her from peers in her orphanage). My world then focuses quite a bit on the horrible things humans do to each other.
And then of course there's the usurping of traditional fantasy elements. Vampires aren't sexy, they're lemur-like bloodsuckers. Succubi aren't hot chicks, they're hairless gorilla-faerie carnivores who use powerful telepathy to subdue and kill their prey. Demons aren't mischievous hell minions, but instead cat-mole beasts that live underground and have an extensive society. Guards actually are useful, magical powers doesn't make people worship you, and no one seems to be going on any quests. Instead of they're rolling out of bed and going "MAN, I have WORK today."
So yeah. That's my work. A human having lunch with their vampire friend at a coffee shop owned by a partial-were with a faerie waitress, to discuss how the government SUCKS, man.
